Shell Opens Hydrogen Station in Newport Beach

August 22nd, 2012 by Fiedler Group

With the opening of its Newport Beach-located integrated gasoline/hydrogen fueling station, Shell effectively doubled the amount of hydrogen available to consumers in California.

In 2011, only six Shell-branded hydrogen fueling stations were found worldwide — with other stations found in Japan and Germany.

This new station, located at 1600 Jamboree Road, is the first high-pressure hydrogen fueling station aimed at private consumers in the state, and the first to serve four hydrogen-powered vehicles at the same time.

The Newport Beach location is the final facility opening of a four demonstration stations roll-out plan in Southern California by Shell, funded in part by a $1.7 million grant received by the California Air Resources Board.

The demonstrations allow Shell to evaluate different hydrogen fueling technologies, learn about costs, consumer behavior, and best dispensing strategies.

An entire island of dispensers has been dedicated exclusively to fueling hydrogen-powered vehicles, with a fueling capacity of 10-12 hydrogen vehicles per day (100 kg per day). The hydrogen itself is produced at the site by a Steam Methane Reformer unit that uses locally-sourced natural gas as feedstock.

Fiedler Group was responsible for the site adaptation design and system integration, station permitting, project management, and construction management for all four Shell demonstration stations – including the first integrated gasoline/hydrogen station in California (West Los Angeles), and more recently a stand-alone site in Torrance that is supplied by a hydrogen pipeline.
