Fiedler Group Wins AIA Award For Sonic Drive-In Restaurant Design

February 17th, 2015 by Fiedler Group

Fiedler Group is the proud recipient of a Citation Award in recognition of design excellence, awarded by the San Fernando Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for its work on a Sonic Drive-In restaurant in Corona, CA.

At the February 7th Awards ceremony, which was attended by a Fiedler Group Team lead by owner Patrick Fiedler and project architect Matthew Epstein, Fiedler Group received its first award for architectural achievement..

Located at 1202 Magnolia Avenue in the Corona Marketplace Center just west of the 15 freeway — the project involved the partial demolition and re-branding of an existing 2,867 square foot Burger King restaurant and the addition of two canopies in the parking lot.

Commissioned by Kasey Suryan of SPG Management, Fiedler Group was responsible for the implementation of Doug Hailey’s (Sonic Industries) design concept, including all architectural, MEP, landscape, and civil design.

The restaurant’s retro-future look includes a stone faced tower element with the Sonic signature arched dome. Ribbed metal panels and a canopy with distinctive sloped roof line and LED lights complete the retro throw-back car-hop environment.

About the San Fernando Valley Chapter of the AIA

The American Institute of Architects is composed of 300 chapters across the country and around the world, serving the needs of U.S. architects, even those working in foreign locales.

The San Fernando Valley Chapter of the AIA was originally founded in 1946 by Valley-based architects under the organization’s name — The Architects of the San Fernando Valley.

In the 1950s, the group’s motto was “A greater and more beautiful San Fernando Valley through better planning and construction,” which was carried out through a variety of public relations efforts, including weekly newspaper columns written by different members.

In 1960, Howard R. Lane led the Valley architects to a formal association with the AIA as the “San Fernando Valley District of the Southern California Chapter.”

And in 1987, the San Fernando Valley Chapter received its official Charter, and recently celebrated its 28th anniversary.
