UPS Expands Advanced Technology Fleet with RNG Partnership with Clean Energy Fuels

June 2nd, 2015 by Fiedler Group

Shortly following a bold announcement adding 1,400 new compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles to its fleet, UPS announced its intent to purchase renewable natural gas (RNG) from Clean Energy Fuels Corp. to support its delivery vehicle fleet.

The goal of the world’s largest package delivery service and supply chain management provider is to expand its use of alternative fuel, driving one billion miles in its advanced technology fleet by the end of 2017.

Clean Energy Fuels is the exclusive provider of Redeem™, the first RNG solution available in commercial quantities.

RNG — also known as biomethane — is derived from a variety of renewable sources including decomposing organic waste found in landfills, waste water treatment, as well as agriculture.

The shipping company’s existing fuel stations in Sacramento, Fresno, and Los Angeles began utilizing Redeem to refuel tractors and delivery vehicles in May.

The partnering organizations estimate the three California-based fuel stations will provide approximately 1.5 million gallon equivalents of RNG fuel to nearly 400 UPS CNG vehicles every year.

Mitch Nichols, UPS senior vice president of transportation and engineering, commented on the agreement, noting “Renewable natural gas is critical to our effort to minimize UPS’s environmental impact while meeting the growing demand for our services.”

He continued, “Today’s RNG agreement will help mature the market for this promising alternative fuel. This commitment also positions UPS to use RNG in its extensive natural gas fleet…”
