Shell opens pipeline-fed hydrogen station

June 10th, 2011 by Fiedler Group

Earlier this month, Fiedler Group was proud to celebrate its involvement in the construction and opening of a Torrance-area hydrogen fueling station and LEED certified learning center. The project was the result of a collaborative effort between Shell, Toyota, Air Products, South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), and the Department of Energy (DOE).

Shell hydrogen station

The Shell station is the sixth hydrogen station to open in Southern California – though it’s the nation’s first station to tap directly into an existing hydrogen pipeline.

While hydrogen-fueled vehicles won’t be sold until 2015, the public’s reception to new alternative energy solutions is largely dependent on the easy and convenient availability of its fuel. The new Torrance station is in close proximity to both freeways and the regional airport.

What was Fiedler Group’s role?
Fiedler Group provided all architectural, MEP, Civil, and Landscape design services. In addition, we also managed and processed all permitting and construction management support.

The making of a Fiedler FirstShell hydrogen station
Since its founding in 1957, Fiedler Group has prided itself in being a leading supplier of innovative engineering and architectural design services.

It’s this commitment that consistently positions Fiedler Group among industry leaders — revolutionizing technologies, processes, and advancements.

So the groundbreaking technologies and developments of the Torrance Shell station were a perfect fit for a new set of Fiedler “firsts.”

  • The facility is the first to tap into an existing hydrogen pipeline.
  • It’s also the first to accommodate different auto manufacturers’ filling protocols – some of which require more high-pressure fuel.
  • Finally, it’s the first station capable of simultaneously refueling four vehicles at once from two dispensers.
