Ferrari To Enter the Electric-Auto Market

Earlier this week, Bloomberg reported that Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne announced Ferrari NV entry into the high end of the electric-auto market and will make a battery-powered supercar.

“If there is an electric supercar to be built, then Ferrari will be the first,” Marchionne said. “People are amazed at what Tesla did with a supercar: I’m not trying to minimize what Elon did, but I think it’s doable by all of us.”

A battery-powered Ferrari would give Tesla competition, whose Tesla Roadster and Model S created the luxury electric-car market way ahead of its fellow contenders.

Offering further comments on Ferrari’s entry into the electric-auto market and hybrid cars, Marchionne noted “We do it because we have to do it, so going from there to an electric is easy.”

Marchionne has been hesitant for years about introducing alternative engines and new technologies, but now he has been known to say that the time is right for a shift in the industry. He believes that by 2025 fewer than half the cars sold will be fully combustion-powered, as gas and diesel become replaced by hybrid, electric and fuel cell drivetrains.
